Authoring and Publication Groups

A most helpful tool, not intended for the shameless self promoter, but rather to offer help and support for the struggling writer. In this past week discussion of process, character development VS plot development, drafts and clean re-writes, and all around support.  Of all the aspiring Authors is one Published author.

The advice I was given personally was: If your critique comes from friends and family > it generally doesn’t mean anything unless they have a history in writing apart from struggling to write their own stuff. I liked to argue that I don’t hand out my stuff to family on account of said rule, and that the people whom have critiqued my work, I have no idea who they are or what they’re history is. All I was looking for was clarity, as in if I could write in a clear compelling fashion that could draw in readers. I didn’t really care about the rest.

Of course it goes without saying that when you submit your work for publication, you don’t ever boast about your story or yourself or about the reviews you’ve had. In the literary world; it doesn’t count for crap

Common sense that is commonly unknown. Great Advice! Thank you!

Never Ending

I got a reference manual this past weekend in regards to Publishers and Agents for when my novel is complete. I figure what the hell I’m halfway done, lets have a peek and see just how much more work is left. *sighs* It’s totally never ending. I can see now why being a Novelist is a career choice and not some whimsical thing. Only the truly lucky can publish one novel and strike it rich.

Oddly I’m totally okay with that. It’s fascinating; the marketing end of the deal I mean. Not that I would want to do the whole marketing thing myself, it’d be nice to have someone who knows what they’re doing on my side.

I only learned the purpose of an Agent last year. It made sense then and it totally makes sense now. I also learned the purpose of a Publicist, and that makes sense too.

The chain of command seems to make sense too.

Novelist > Agent > Publisher > Publicist

I’m not too fond of the whole touring the Province/Country thing. It seems a bit of a hassle…though I suspect that it might be necessary. *shrug* Whatever, if it’s a must, I just got to remember to bring a pen and paper or maybe a laptop. There’s no sense in wasting traveling time – unless I’m the one driving then it doesn’t make any sense to work while on the road.

Anyway, the novel is growing bit by bit. It even threatened to say that it was going to be the 2nd Novel and not the first. It seems to be developing a mind of its own. Though I like the idea that it brings up in regards to a ‘suggested’ first novel, I’m going to have to stick with this one for the time being.

I’ve already considered a Prequel and quite honestly I just want to see how well the main character fairs first before I go on and place some sort of importance on the other characters whom are merely mentioned but otherwise still play a very important part in the story. Anyway the point is Novel 1 = out of control and in dire need of taming.
